KAMPALA - In a series of meetings with Ugandans living abroad, President Yoweri Museveni has pledged free land as an incentive to lure back to set up industries, especially small-scale factories.

According to Abbey Walusimbi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson of the diaspora party, Museveni’s gesture is not only a timely gesture, but a good move that will endear many Ugandans abroad to invest in their country.

Walusimbi said this at a press briefing on Tuesday at the NRM headquarters on Kyaddondo Road in Kampala.

“During our meeting with the President at State House, Entebbe, he promised to give incentives, such as free land, so that Ugandans can set up an industrial park," he said.

"He also promised to set up a diaspora workplan and investment implementation strategy, which will enable Ugandans living abroad to invest in the country’s major sectors, such as oil and gas,” Walusimbi added.

“Diaspora members should be encouraged to come home and invest as well as encourage foreign partners to do the same. The President also emphasised the fact that the diaspora includes all Ugandans living abroad or returnees irrespective of their political inclination,” he added.

According to NRM officials, Museveni met over 50 Ugandans living abroad in Entebbe last week.

The team comprised experts in various fields, including oil and gas, medicine, business, education and agriculture.

Walusimbi said it was the second meeting to be organised as a follow-up on the first meeting that took place at the beginning of this month.
