Cheptegei was voted January’s best for winning the De Italica cross-country championship

Athlete Joshua Cheptegei beat basketball club City Oilers and the rally crew of Jas Mangat and Joseph Kamya to win the Nile Special USPA sports personality for the month of January .

Cheptegei was voted January's best for winning the De Italica cross-country championship in Seville Spain last month after posting 30.54 seconds.

He collected 360 points, 25 ahead of city Oilers who emerged second with 335 points, while the crew of Mangat Kamya got 295 points during a vote in Kampala on Monday.

USPA president, Sabiiti Muwanga urged sports leaders to work towards unity in their respective organisations to promote sports in the country.

"I know there are wrangles in some sports federations, but I appeal to the leaders to work towards Unity for the good of athletes," Muwanga said.

"These wrangles affect athletes and this denies Uganda medals on the international stage."

Muwanga also urged NCS to play an arbitration role to bring together the leadership factions other than siding with one party.

He explained that Table Tennis and cycling athletes have been left out of the Nile Special/USPA awards gala recognition because of the ongoing wrangles in the respective federations.
