Katakwi parents told to let children choose their careers

KATAKWI - The headteacher Usuk Secondary School in Katakwi district, Juventine Imanitai, has urged parents to give their children a chance to choose subject combination and courses of their choice.

Imanitai's insight comes at a time when students who wrote their Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) last year prepare to join A'level and tertiary institutions.

According to Imanitai, some parents have a tendency of forcing their children to offer combinations which against their (children's) interest.

"Students who are forced to offer a combination that are not of their choice end up failing in," he said.

However, Imanitai expressed joy over the great improved performance the school registered in UCE examinations.

Out of 148 students who sat their final examinations at Usuk Secondary School, three passed in Division One.

According to Imanitai, this represents 2.5 %, which he said is better compared to 2015, where they garnered 1.3% candidates passing in first grade.

The students who scored first grade include Benard Emudoko with aggregate 22, Jorem Otikou, 29 and John Robert Odisa with aggregate 32.

The headteacher attributed the good performance to co-operation between teachers, parents, and administrators, as well as hard work and discipline by both students and teachers.
