Golf elections in balance despite expiry of Omolo term

Johnson Omolo, the current president has served two terms of one year each

Following the adoption of a new constitution last October, the belated Uganda Golf Union elections will not be held this year despite expiry of the two-year term of the current executive.

Johnson Omolo, the current president has served two terms of one year each, but could serve for another two-year term following the constitutional changes.

"We are still working and the elections are still very far. You know we amended the constitution," Omolo said recently when contacted about his tenure.

When contacted about the same, Uganda Golf Union (UGU) secretary Bernard Mbayo said there is an annual general meeting coming up in March, but he was also non-committal on whether the day's agenda will involve election of a new committee.

"The constitution is newly adopted and the law works forward. But we will decide that at the AGM especially after being advised by the legal experts; ours is a very democratic institution," Mbayo noted.

During a UGU extra ordinary meeting held in September last year, adaption of the amended constitution was one of the items on the agenda with members permitting current vice-president Innocent Kihika to highlight on major inclusions and exclusions on amendments to the constitution.

A discussion among delegates that ensued later highlighted that; "The executive Committee of the Union shall be elected at the general meeting and shall hold office for two terms of office with each term being two years and that no person shall serve on the executive Committee in the same position for more than two consecutive terms.

The meeting also resolved that, "For purposes of the Trustees incorporation act and the National Council of Sports Act and Regulations, the Union shall be incorporated under the said act for purposes of becoming a body corporate, capable of suing or being sued and limiting the liability of the members of the union,"

But records at NCS indicate golf is one the sport that is yet to register as per regulations.

Omolo became president in 2016 having served on past committees for seven years and promised to serve for two terms of one year each after defeating Innocent Kihika by a vote (10-9).

His deputy Herbert Rwamibazi resigned after a few months in office due to work commitments and was not long ago replaced by Kihika who is looking to take over the reins. Bernard Mbayo and Paul Baite are serving as secretary and treasurer respectively while Oscar Semawere and John Bosco Tumusiime were elected as committee members.
