Lukwago suspends council meeting indefinitely

KAMPALA - Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has suspended council meetings following the boycott of the meetings by the technical team.

Lukwago's pronouncement comes after the technical team demanded that they should develop a workplan of the authority before council meetings resume.

"I have been constrained to call off council meetings until the council and management resolve the matter. My meetings are adjourned until then," he told the press.

He said management should arrange an engagement with the authority on re-engineering of the business process of the authority.

Two weeks ago, councillors blocked the technical team from moving out a council seating, after Kampala Minister Beti Kamya announced that Lukwago's convened meetings were illegal and not in compliance with the KCCA 2010 Act.

Kamya also told Lukwago that her office would carry out an evaluation of all authority and urban council meetings that have taken place since May 2016.

The councillors' reaction to the technical team after Kamya's communication caused Samuel Sserukuma, the acting deputy executive director for KCCA, to reveal that management had resolved not to engage in any meeting as they were not sure of their security.

The technical team also wants Lukwago's authority to commit to maintaining the decorum of the authority meetings or any other meeting involving members of the authority and mutual respect of between the authority and management.
