The sky is the limit for 18-year-old Stella Babirye after she won the SOM Academy Chess tournament at the weekend in Bujjuku.

Babirye who competed against male opponents in the open category finished with 6 points in eight rounds to register her maiden victory at the annual event.

She maximised the absence of the 10 time title holder Phiona Mutesi, who is currently studing at the Northwest University in the US to take control of the women’s category at the three days event.

The St. Mbuga Vocational student beat Hussein Bwanga, Anold Pamu, Arzidah Nalwada, Fred Kasozi, Calvin Takebeya and Joseph Kasule.

She only lost to Derrick Mirembe and Solomon Nambasi to end the tournament with 6pts and a better tie break than Vanessa Nakayima in second place and the 2015 champion Joan Nakimuli in third position.

“The tournament was challenging because they made us play with the boys on the some boards, but I feel great that I managed to win,” Babirye said.

Meanwhile, in the men’s category, Richard Buyinza claimed his second title after ending the eight rounds event with 7.5pts.

Buyinza first won the men’s crown in 2015 but later lost it to Martine Musiime. However his recent victory against David Muwanguzi, Travor Kazibwe, Gloria Nansubuga, Tony Sentumbwe, Derrick Mirembe, Julius Ssali and Richard Tugume saw him reclaim his title at the weekend.
