SUSPENSION OF HARVESTING AND TRADE IN AFZELIA AFRICANA AND SHEA NUT TREES

Afzelia Africana commonly known as afzelia or Beyo and shea nut trees are both reserved tree species in Uganda and the trees are only found in northern Uganda and West Nile sub regions.

The species have become highly vulnerable due to uncontrolled, rampant, illegal harvesting and trade in the logs and their products In order to strengthen regulation of trade in the trees and their products, I suspend any cutting, transportation and sale of the logs and their products in line with section 29(3) of the National Forestry and Tree Planting Act (2003) with immediate effect.

We will review and harmonize the licensing, harvesting, movement and trade in the products before resuming operations regarding trade in the logs and other products.

Any harvesting, movement, trade in the products is therefore illegal and no clearance of any sort should be granted for trade in the products. All logs of the trees and their products will be impounded if found during harvesting, transportation, processing and sale. Public is notified and required to observe the suspension. CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS ON THIS NOTICE
