Senior Command College gets Indian Brigadier tutor, buses

Kimaka college was established in 2003 with the most popular and widely attended course being the senior command course, which is conducted annually

Prime minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has welcomed an Indian military officer Brig. Proveen Kairy VSM sponsored by the Indian government to facilitate training of military officers at the Senior Command and Staff College, Kimaka in Jinja.

This was during the closure of two day Confederation of Indian Industry- EXIM Bank Regional Conclave (meeting) on India and East Africa. The function took place at the Speke Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo, Kampala.

Rugunda was pleased to note that the meeting yielded solutions to the improved welfare and training of soldiers in Africa.

Rugunda also appreciated the donation of two 38-seater Ashok Leyland buses that made in India.  The two buses were donated to college by the Indian based Ashok Leyland company.

"The two buses will be available to our soldiers who suffer and sacrifice for our country. They have benefitted from the conclave," Rugunda said.

Kairy, a security advisor said every year they admit 40 military officers coming from different parts of Africa with the majority coming from the UPDF.

Kairy said the students undertake one year courses which involves them travelling for military exercises, trainings in different parts of Uganda. He said the travel had been affected because of lack of transport but now the buses will boost the training.

Shobana Kamineni, the president of Confederation of Indian Industry said the cost of not investing or promoting economic relations between the two countries would lead to increasing unemployment and retardation in social, economic and political progress in the two countries.

Ravi Shanar, the High Commissioner of India to Uganda said India has decided to invest heavily in solar energy and technology. Shanar said India also wants to increase use of ICT in government which Uganda can gain from.

Kimaka college was established in 2003. The most popular and widely attended course is the senior command course, conducted annually. The course is attended by senior offers from the UPDF and by senior military officers from other African countries including Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan and Rwanda.

Other courses include strategic courses in peacekeeping. The graduates of the college include Gen. Salim Saleh, Gen Elly Tumwine, Gen. David Sejusa.
