Christakis Fitidis has clinched the 2017 National Rally Championship (NRC) after finishing seventh overall in the Oryx Heartbeat Rally in Masaka.

Fitidis navigated by Eric Nzamwita in a Mitsubishi Evo 10 collected 30 points to reach 405 points, five ahead of Ronald Ssebuguzi (400pts) who won the Oryx Heartbeat Rally.

The tightly contested rally saw Hassan Alwi crash in Bukulula a few meters to the flying finish, with only two sections to end the rally.

"I'm happy we won the championship but it was not easy. We had to push harder than what we expected because all the top drivers were flying," Fitidis stated.

Duncan Mubiru who was also in contention for the championship at the beginning of the rally finished third overall with 365 points after finishing third in the rally.

Ssebuguzi navigated by Leon Ssenyange in a Mitsubishi Evo 10 congratulated Fitidis for the victory.

"We tried our best, but Mzee (Fitidis) was equally good and managed to win the NRC. We congratulate him and wait for next year," Ssebuguzi said.
