Mbidde who was re-elected seven months ago said there is no legal obstacle barring them from taking oath

The vice-president of the Opposition Democratic Party (DP), Fred Mukasa Mbidde, has petitioned the East African Court of justice seeking an order to swear in the members of the East African Legislative Assembly.

Mbidde who was re-elected seven months ago to the assembly on the DP ticket said there is no legal obstacle barring them from taking oath to represent and articulate the views of the people.

He said waiting for Kenya to elect their representatives cannot stop the work of the Assembly because there are other issues in the region to attend to.

Kenya has not elected representatives due to disagreements between the ruling party and the opposition over the election of their representatives to the regional parliament.

Mbidde now wants the court to direct the secretary general of the East African community to organize the swearing in.
