"As a disabled person, I found it difficult to access many facilities in the schools I went to. I had to depend on other children to push me around. Sometimes they refused to, which was frustrating."

The deputy head of development co-operation at the embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Hans-Hinrich Schnelle, has advised Uganda Government to include persons with disability (PWDs) in its development plans.

Hans made the appeal while commissioning the pathways and ramps for people with disabilities at Yurie Yoshimi memorial primary school in Namayumba town council, Wakiso district, on Friday last week.

"People with disabilities should not be left behind because they too can contribute to a country's development and so they need to be supported," Hans said.

He said supporting people with disabilities does not require a lot of money and the German embassy is just trying to set an example so that Uganda government can do the same in many other schools in the country.

He pointed out that having smooth pathways and ramps in schools enables children with disability to access facilities like class rooms and toilets.

The director of Rights for Disability Development Foundation, Bob Lubega, appealed to the government to make it a must that all schools cater for disadvantaged children.

Namayumba town council mayor, Nelson Kalyango, who is also disabled hailed the Germany development co-operation for the initiative of building pathways and ramps in schools.

"As a disabled person, I found it difficult to access many facilities in the schools I went to. I had to depend on other children to push me around. Sometimes they refused to and it was frustrating," he said.
