Statement on the African Human Rights Day - 21st October 2017



On Saturday, 21st October 2017, Africa commemorated the African Human Rights Day which was inaugurated on 21st October 1986 when the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights came into force. This year's African Human Rights Day was commemorated under the theme ‘Enhancing Youth Contributi on towards Effective Implementati on of the Acti on Plan of the Human and Peoples' Rights Decade in Africa.'

At its 27th Ordinary Session in July 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda, the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Governments declared the next ten years (2017-2026) as ‘the Human and Peoples' Rights Decade in Africa'.

Subsequently, a ten-year Acti on Plan was made to give eff ect to this Declaration. Uganda as a member of the AU is therefore, enjoined to annually commemorate the African Human Rights Day and to acti vely take part in the implementati on of the Acti on Plan.
