The congress approved amendments to the party’s constitution to incorporate Chinese President Xi Jinping’s theory of governance of modern China

The 19th congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) concluded in Beijing on Tuesday with a call to deepen socialism with Chinese characteristics in responding to contemporary realities and needs.

The congress approved amendments to the party's constitution to incorporate Chinese President Xi Jinping's theory of governance of modern China.

The theory codenamed Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in a new Era will inform the party's philosophy of governing the world's second largest economy for the next five years.

All past Chinese leaders' ideologies on governance have been enshrined in the Communist Party of China's constitution.

Founding leader Chairman Mao Zedong "Thought" is one of the most compelling in the party's charter.

According to a statement, the congress urged party members to "put the Thought into action throughout the drive toward China's socialist modernisation and in every dimension of party building".

The once in every five years meeting has been taking place at the Great Hall of the People, China's seat of government for a week.

Over 2,000 delegates took part in amending the constitution and choosing the party's leaders for the next five years.

204 members of the party's central committee, a key decision making organ were elected. President Xi Jinping and Premier Le Keqiang are some of the members of the all-powerful body.

Members of the party's politburo and the standing committee of the Central Committee, the apex body of the CPC are expected to be unveiled on Thursday.

The party also vowed support for One belt One Road, an initiative by Xi Jinping to foster global development through infrastructure, finance and trade featuring China and countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.

The party swore that China would "actively support international co-operation through the belt and road initiative and continue to take an active part in reforming and developing the global governance system", according to a resolution statement.

In his remarks to the closing session, President Xi Jinping struck a triumphant tone. He said Under CPC rule, China had overcome bullying by foreign powers and shaken off poverty and weakness.

"Today, more than 1.3 billion Chinese people live in jubilation and dignity", he said.

Xi commended the work of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), China's top anti-corruption watchdog saying it has "ensured disciplinary inspections cut like a blade through corruption and misconduct".

Xi has made fighting graft a major theme of his administration. Opening the party's summit last week, he singled out corruption as the biggest threat to the party's survival.

The Communist Party of China, in power since 1949, was founded in 1921. It has nearly 90m members.
