Street parking guides strike over pay

The workers say since Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) increased the parking fees from sh400 to 1,000, they too should be given better pay

Over 350 Multiplex Limited street parking guides spent half of Monday morning at the Railway Grounds, in a sit down strike demanding better pay from their employer.

The workers say since Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) increased the parking fees from sh400 to 1,000, they too should be given better pay.

They say they are paid according to the number of tickets they sell daily, which they term as unfair treatment.

"We are told that if you sell less than 35 tickets a day you are not paid, but we feel this is not fair. We want a standard fee irrespective of the tickets sold, "said a one Opio.

Opio said those who sale 40 tickets are paid wages of sh6,500 per day.

Another guide who operates around Nakasero Street explains that they want their employer to increase their wages to sh15,000 per day.

In September KCCA increased parking fees in the city centre and its suburbs.

When contacted Multiplex project manager, Elidad Kansiime said that he was in a meeting with management.

Multiplex was contracted by KCCA to manage street parking in the city.
