Gone are the days when people bought furniture and within days it gets ruined because of the weak materials used by the carpenters.
Philip Senkoole has invented a durable product. He has come out to prove that stones can give one a sparkling furniture product.
Senkoole is the director of Nakwero Stone Crafts and he has been in the business for nine years.
How he started
According to Senkoole who did textile designing while at Kyambogo University, he wanted something new, but realised that everything had almost been used for design. He then thought of stones.
"Since I grew up loving art and made different designs and cuttings out of paper, I thought of something that was not on the Ugandan market," Senkoole says.
He explains that he has made different products from stones; especially stone furniture which he hopes will gain market soon.
Process
He says when he gets the raw materials from the mining area, he then brings them to his workshop.
Senkoole says he has different machines and brushes that he uses to smoothen the stones to a texture ideal for a particular product.
He then measures the stones depending on what he wants to do and then cuts them to make a fine piece of stone.
His market
Senkoole who has made different items from the stones such as stools, coffee tables, backyard seats, garden seats, says most of his market has been in different organisations that want furniture at their offices and waiting areas and a few orders for people that own bars and hotels.
Durability and maintenance
According to Senkoole stones are so durable and and are easy to maintain.
"When the stone furniture gets dirty, it is just a matter of dusting and cleaning it," he says.
