Over sh11m has been collected to establish child learning centres in Karamoja region, in a marathon organised by the education ministry in partnership with NGO Centre for Research (CSR) and other partners.

Several educational institutions, private sector and corporate companies took part in the run.

The marathon dubbed 2017 Annual Education Run, took place at Kololo Ceremonial grounds in Kampala yesterday.

The money will be used to establish of four childhood learning centres in Karamoja and west Nile.

According to Wilson Asiimwe, the Research Director at CSR, his organisation, together with the education ministry, will work with schools in the two sub-regions (Karamoja and West Nile) to give them materials such as infrastructure and learning aides.

“The learning Centres targets children aged up to six years and they will be taught from morning up to lunch time.”

Apitta Omara, the Commissioner for Physical Education in the education ministry, noted that the run has been going on since 2015.

He said early childhood early learning sub-sector has been mainly private sector led, but the ministry is coming up with a curriculum relevant to early learners.

“Eventually, we will require primary schools to have elements of early childhood education,” he stated.
