Consult all Ugandans on age limit Bill - Mao

Mao called on for dialogue between NRM and Opposition members in order to have the matter discussed in public with people’s involvement

The Democratic Party (DP) president general, Nobert Mao, has opposed the position by the National Resistant Movement (NRM) of stopping their MPs from consulting Ugandans on lifting of Article 102 (b) of the Constitution on the presidential age limit, saying it is unfair.

Article 102 (b) bars a person aged below 35 and above 75 years from standing for the most top office as president. If it is not amended, President Yoweri Museveni will not be eligible to stand in 2021.

"We are of the view that all Ugandans be consulted to get their views. This is not just an issue of MPs," he said.

Mao called on for a dialogue between NRM and Opposition members in order to have the matter discussed in public with people's involvement.

He was addressing journalists at the party's weekly press briefing at the party headquarters in Kampala yesterday.

Mao also revealed that the party was in the process of filing a case against the proceedings of Parliament that led to the moving of MP Raphael Magyezi's age limit motion, the invasion of the House by security personnel and the manner in which Speaker Rebecca Kadaga suspended MPs.

About the money to be given out to MPs for consultations, Mao said he had no problem with Opposition MPs taking the money.
