The going gets tough for Uganda in Zimbabwe

Oct 12, 2017

Uganda will now be playing to not only to improve their current position but also to better their 5th place finish they achieved the last time

Ronald Otile remained Uganda's best player after round three of the Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship taking place at the Elephant Hills Golf Club in Zimbabwe.

Just like his second round, Otile returned a one-over-par 73 but it wasn't enough for the team as the other team members who had propelled the team to 7thposition on day two, instead had a tough round that had the team slip back to tenth place.

Daniel Baguma and Ronald Rugumayo each carded seven-over-par 79 as Ismail Muhamud toiled with a non-counting 87, as defending champion South Africa maintained their lead with a gross score of 636, twenty two strokes ahead of hosts Zimbabwe, going into the last round of the biennial event.

In the last round on Friday, Uganda will now be playing to not only to improve their current position but also to better their 5th place finish they achieved the last time the event was held in Nairobi.

But that can only happen this year if other team members raise their game to the level of Otile, otherwise teams like Reunion, Egypt, Swaziland and Mauritius have performed far better than in previous editions against Uganda.

Meanwhile Uganda Golf Union president Johnson Omolo has been re-elected vice president of the Africa Golf Confederation (North Africa) at an AGC meeting held on Wednesday in Zimbabwe.

Omolo was reappointed alongside Joe Malanje who retained the presidency. Committee members are Mike Aggrey (Ghana), Mohamed Khadri (Egypt), Richard Wanjala (Kenya) and Maher Bouchami (Tunisia).

"I'm grateful to the AGC assembly for giving me another term to serve Africa in the same capacity. I commit to work for golf on the continent," Omolo said.

He said he will use his position to develop the game in Uganda and the region at large.
