Celebrating quality pharmaceuticals

CiplaQCIL, the country's leading pharmaceutical factory, is marking 10 years since it was set up. The managing director, Nevin Bradford talked to Owen Wagabaza about the journey they have covered so far and where they plan to take their operations in the next decade

Briefly give us a background of Cipla Quality Chemicals Industries Limited

Cipla Quality Chemicals Industries Ltd (CiplaQCIL)is a modern pharmaceutical plant that manufactures a range of medicines for both malaria and HIV/AIDS. CiplaQCIL was established in 2005 as a joint venture company between Cipla Ltd of India; the world's largest manufacturer of generic medicines and Quality Chemicals Industries Ltd of Uganda.

The venture attracted two other international investors namely; Capital Works Investment and TLG Capital Investment of Mauritius. The establishment of the pharmaceutical plant is in line with the pharmaceutical manufacturing plan of action for Africa, the East African pharmaceutical manufacturing plan of action and the Millenium Development Goals.

The plant seeks to take advantage of the flexibilities provided by the agreement on trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights, for access to affordable, newer and safer medicines for the poor.

Sitting on 12 acres of land, we employ over 300 people, 80% of whom are Ugandans and we are manufacturing 130 million tablets a month. Our goal is to manufacture pharmaceutical products of the highest quality with zero environmental impact, adhere to current good manufacturing practices, good laboratory practices and international regulatory standards. CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON THIS STORY
