Independence Day celebrations at Mumsa High School in Mityana district were on Monday canceled, following the attack and murder of the school security guard.

Joseph Ebunju was attacked and killed by unknown thugs in the wee hours of Monday morning, while on duty.

The school is owned by the state minister for local government in Mengo, Joseph Kawuki, and it is located in Mityana Municipality.

Kawuki said there were two guards on duty, but Ebunju was killed as another went on to monitor another side of the school.

"He remained near the gate and his colleague went to monitor the side of the classes. When he returned, he found his colleague dead," Kawuki said.

The thugs also broke into the offices of the headmaster and the bursar and stole money and other items.

Inside the headmasters office, they broke all the locks and destroyed a lot of properties.

Police, led by the Mityana district police commander, Emmanuel Mafundo, arrived at the scene and removed the body of the deceased and took it to Mityana hospital mortuary.

Sniffer dogs went around the village stopped at the home of a one Kajoba, but he was not at home.

Kajoba's relatives said he had returned late at night and left early morning and did not know where he was.

DPC Mafundo said the thugs jumped into the school compound through the perimeter wall behind the office and attacked the guard.

He said they are still continuing with the investigations.
