UPC supporters march to commemorate 55 years of Independence at Akii Bua Stadium in Lira

Lira district joined the rest of the country to commemorate the 55 Independence anniversary with the Uganda People's congress (UPC) supporters dominating the event held at Akii Bua Stadium.

Dressed in their party colours of red, blue and black and carrying the portraits of Lira Municipality MP Jimmy Akena and his father, former president Dr Apolo Milton Obote, UPC party members participated in the parade and later danced to UPC songs soon after the function.

The resident district commissioner (RDC), Robert Abak, who officiated at the function assured the people that the Government will not entertain illegal land evictions in the country.

Abak said the evictions are causing insecurity in villages. "People come with court orders to chase hundreds of residents from their land," he said.

The RDC commended the security team for working tirelessly to ensure that peace and security prevails in the district.

Lira Municipal council speaker, Geoffrey Ogwal, who represented the mayor, said the municipality will be taking lessons from Rwanda to ensure that the town is kept clean.

Ogwal was part of delegation of municipal leaders including the Mayor Mike ogwang, town clerk Assy Abirebe Tumwesigire and his deputy, Patrick Ogweng, who visited the Rwandese capital of Kigali this week on a study tour.
