HOMES|CONSTRUCTION

The main purpose of a door is to control access and enhance the appearance of a home.

Doors are made of different materials such as wood, glass and aluminium.

The types on the market include hinged, sliding and rotating doors, but our focus today is on wooden doors.

Whatever the type, doors have three common features the frame, handle and edges.

Cleaning

Doors are easy to clean but many tend to forget cleaning them.

In order to keep our doors looking nice, we need to clean them at least twice a month and dust them once a week to prevent a buildup of cobwebs and dust.

Doors have other parts depending on their design. Some have panels, muntins among others. Clean the other parts accordingly.

Spray liquid furniture polish on the surface of the wooden door and use a clean dry cloth to rub it into the grain of the wood. This will help remove any existing stains and will restore the wood's natural sheen.

However, do not use scouring pads or any form of abrasives on doors. Strong cleaning agents destroy the protective coatings on the handles and subject the finish to rapid oxidation and discoloration.

When cleaning your wooden doors with water or other liquid cleaners, make sure you dry the door thoroughly.

If the wood is not sealed properly, the moisture could cause the wood to warp or stain over time.

Door handle Using a mild detergent, dampen the cleaning cloth and wipe both sides of the handle, putting emphasis on the lever.

Dry the handle with a wiping cloth. In order to eliminate germs that cause diseases such as flu, apply a hand sanitiser on the door handles after wiping them.

Doorframe

Since we seldom clean our doors, doorframes hold a lot of dust.

Dampen the wiping cloth and clean the doorframe

Wash the wiping cloth with soap, rinse and then wipe again.

Repeat the process until the frame is clean.

Dry with a dry cloth.

Door edges

Using a damp cloth, wipe off the dust from the door edges, starting from the upper part going downwards.

Wash the wiping cloth with soap and rinse, then wipe again.

Repeat the process until the edges are clean.
