Besigye calls for nonviolent action against government

Police on Thursday deployed heavily at Mayor's Gardens in Lira anticipating that the main Opposition leader Col Kizza Besigye would venture into the area to address a rally.  

Amidst great fanfare, Besigye had on Wednesday arrived in Lango and had visited neighbouring Kole district, where he welcomed over 400 people who defected to FDC party from UPC and NRM parties. The defectors included the UPC district chairperson Okeng Olet and his executives.

The opposition leader who was accompanied by FDC party presidential aspirant, Patrick Amuriat and Salam Musumba later addressed the people of Lango on Voice of Lango in the evening.

On Thursday, Besigye visited Daniel Omara Atubo to commiserate with him over the death of his son who died of carbon monoxide poisoning on September 17, 2017. 

In his address to the people of Lango, Besigye preached unity in order to remove ‘dictator Museveni'. 

Without giving specifics, Besigye said the people should take actions that paralyze people in government, without endangering themselves. But he emphasized that they should be nonviolent and ‘very effective'.

"Some people are saying we should get guns and fight. We can remove the dictator with the gun, but there is a problem [as it could lead to massive loss of lives]," he stated. 


Besigye said his visit to the region was to encourage those fighting for democratic change not to lose heart. "They [Langi] are saying no to control of our country by a few people who rule us by the fear of guns," he said, 

Besigye said called upon people to emulate Kasese who have united to refuse ‘Museveni's rigging machinery'.
