“Others were using them as filtering local brew called Kwete which they sell to people in the markets and trading centres”.

Kanaginagi Ateenyi, the councilor for Pakanyi sub-county has said that most people especially the youth in the villages have turned the recently distribute nets into goal post nets in different football playground.

He added: "Others were using them as filtering local brew called Kwete which they sell to people in the markets and trading centres".

He made the revelation during a stake holders' meeting at hotel Aribas in Masindi which was organized by Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) on budgeting and accountability process.

In April 2017, the government of Uganda carried out a country wide distribution of mosquito nets to fight the spread of malaria.

Kanaginagi also said that other people had decided to use them to cover their nursery beds near the swamps and rivers while women were using them as ropes to tie fire woods.

"We are going to pass a bylaw and start arresting such people who are sabotaging government programmes through misuse of things given to them because most Ugandans are becoming more irresponsible,"
he said.

Dr. George Musoga  Bateganya the medical superintendent Masindi main hospital said chemicals sprayed in those mosquito nets to kill mosquitos can be harmful to human beings and discouraged locals from using them for filtering local brew .
