Four people on Monday morning died on the spot and 21 others were admitted in critical condition at various health facilities in Tororo district after a lorry they travelling in overturned.

The truck registration UAV 010V overturned in Taojwoki village along Busolwe-Tororo murram road at around 7:30 am when the driver tried to avoid knocking a bicycle rider who was in the middle of the road.

Ogwal Kasule the Tororo district traffic officer confirmed the deadly incident saying the victims were on their way back from Wikusi village in Kirewa Sub County in Tororo district where they had spent a night for last funeral rites.

Kasule said all the victims are from the same family and are residents of Osia-Boke village in Osukuru Sub County in Tororo. Police failed to identify the deceased because their faces were caked in soil.

The truck driver Mafia Oketcho said he was trying to dodge the bicycle when he lost control of the truck that over turned several times. Oketcho is admitted at Tororo Hospital with multiple fractures.

Ogwal however said the accident was caused by reckless and drunk driving since most of the victims receiving treatment were still inebriated. He said they also recovered jerrycans filled with local brew and other types of alcohol.

The remains of the deceased were taken to Tororo municipal mortuary where relatives are expected to and identify them.
