Age limit: Religious leaders to make pronouncement

Religious leaders under their umbrella organisation, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) is set to make a statement about the on-going debate of amending article 102 of the Constitution to lift presidential age limit.

The silence of religious leaders on the contentious matter has been  attracting criticism from the public. However, Apostle Dr. Joseph Serwadda, an associate member of IRCU and president of Born Again Faith union in Uganda, revealed that religious leaders will pronounce themselves on the matter on Tuesday.

"On Tuesday, we shall announce our position on the impending amendment of the Constitution after a consultative meeting" said Serwadda.

Serwadda made the revelation on Sunday morning while appearing on a local TV.

Meanwhile, the good-working relationship between religious leaders and the state has tempted political leaders, especially those in opposition, to believe that they have been compromised.

A case in point is when the vice-president of Forum for Democratic Change for eastern region, Proscovia Salaamu Musumba, was quoted by the media saying whereas. Iddi Amin was a bully, "Religious leaders like Archbishop Luwum paid the ultimate price for telling him that he was taking the wrong path."

Ugandans fronting the proposal to amend Article 102 argue that it is discriminative in nature and that (among other issues) it does not allow people beyond 75 years to exercise their right to serve.
