CLARIFICATION ON SHS2B FOR CANCER DRUGS UNUSED AS PATIENTS DIE

Ugandacancerinstitutelog 703x422

Our attention has been drawn to the Daily Monitor headlines of Monday, 21st August 2017 ‘Shs2b for cancer drugs unused as patients die’.

The Release misleads the General Public into believing that Uganda Cancer Institute does not submit its drug procurement plan and does not place requisitions to the National Medical Stores hence letting the patients to suffer.

The Management of Uganda Cancer Institute would like to put it categorically clear that Uganda Cancer Institute has been submitting its drugs requisitions monthly to the National Medical Stores but only receives a few of the requested items.

The National Medical stores supplies about 40% of the requested anticancer drug items to the UCI.

The supply system is unpredictable and thus cannot be relied on to manage cancer patients who are especially poor and whose disease is rapidly progressing thus leading to treatment failures because the patients do not get their treatment as planned in a cyclic manner as per the standards.

This has not only led to resistance to the common conventional cheaper treatment regimens but has drastically led to a high mortality rates and very poor quality of life of patients as the survival rate of life years is tremendously reduced.
