Over the years, a sizeable number of Ugandans have succumbed to death as a result of drowning at beaches and swimming pools, leaving behind grieving relatives and colleagues.

However, Saturday was  the Uganda Swimming Federation’s (USF) opportune moment to remember the victims as they joined the rest of the world to celebrate and commemorate the first ever FINA World Aquatics day celebrations at Ggaba landing site and Rainbow International school, Kansanga.

“We have lost many of our people as a result of a lack of knowledge about swimming. So the idea was to have mass participation and create awareness on water safety and swimming for life,” said the competition secretary Uganda Swimming Federation and executive member, Max kanyerezi.

“It was also to encourage people to embrace swimming as a healthy life skill something that will help lessen the deaths rates brought about by drowning,” he added.

Spearheaded by the USF president, Dr. Donald Rukare, the Uganda Olympic Committee president, William Blick and USF officials attended the first session at Ggaba Landing site before they matched all the way to Rainbow International School where they had a lot of aquatic activities to showcase like water polo and swimming.

They also educated the community on the benefits of swimming as they passed on life saving skills.
