Most indigenous crops were not affected by the changing weather patterns

Farmers in Teso have been advised to venture more into growing indigenous crops so as to enhance food security in the region.

The call has been made by the councillor representing Adakar Parish at Asuret Sub County council in Soroti district, Misilam Acou.

The statement comes at a time the region is trying to recover from a food crisis.

He says farmers should concentrate on crops which could be relied on during inadequate and unpredictable rainfall.

According to him, the indigenous crops which include sweet potatoes, cassava, yams and millet, have the ability to benefit the farmers economically as most were not affected by the changing weather patterns.

He also noted that most of these crops were almost immune to many pest and diseases making them less expensive to cultivate.

On the same note, youth chairperson Amuuria Anglican Church in Serere district, Robert Engole, urged on locals to embrace the culture of growing cash crops instead of relying on food crops for sale.

Notably among other cash crops farmers should grow, Engole asked farmers to grow include cotton, sugarcane, sunflower and the likes.
