NRM CEC members warn MPs against age limit debate

A cross-section of the National Resistance Movement's (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) members has warned their party colleagues in Parliament to desist from the age limit debate.

NRM MPs Ibrahim Abiriga (Arua Municipality) James Kakooza (Kabula County) and Simeo Nsubuga (Kasanda South) are currently pushing for the amendment of Article 102 (b) of the Constitution to lift the presidential age limit.

Addressing the media on Monday, at the party headquarters in Kampala, the members said CEC had not formally discussed the matter which they said is misleading members of the public.

"The debate on the alleged proposal to amend the constitution is misguided, irresponsible, redundant and at best divisionary," Simon Peter Aleper, the NRM vice chairperson for Karamoja region said.

The members advised their colleagues to instead promote the party's manifesto which they said focuses on lifting the lives of Ugandan citizens to middle income status by the year 2020.

Government has not officially tabled the proposal to lift the presidential age limit which is capped at 75 years.

However members of the public especially the opposition and the civil society have since opposed the alleged proposal saying it would affect democracy and stability in the country.
