LAND PROBE

KAMPALA - The Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura on appeared before the commission of inquiry into land.

He was summoned to answer questions regarding police's alleged involvement in the sale of a government building and land plot  60-62 located on Saidina Abubaker road in Jinja town.

Information availed to the Lady Justice Catherine Bamugemereire-led commission indicated that the building on the said land was demolished under supervision of the police led by the then DPC Apolo Kateeba.

Kateeba is said to have received huge bribes and which he allegedly shared with the fallen police spokesperson Felix Kaweesi to allow the demolition of the government building built by a private investor.

Kayihura told the committee that he condemns the police officers who were involved, saying the police should not be partisan.

He said he did not investigate the issue as it was around the general election time, a busy period for the force.

Tuesday is the second day of public hearings by the commission since it resumed work after taking a technical break two weeks ago.

Monday saw Inspector General of Government (IGG) Irene Mulyagonja appear before the commission, where she told the probe that suspected fraudsters are taking advantage of the courts of law to stop prosecutions against them.
