Opposition rejects compulsory land acquisition Bill

Jul 20, 2017

Last week the deputy attorney general Mwesigwa Rukutana tabled the controversial Bill

The Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza and her shadow cabinet have resolved to carry out a countrywide campaign against the Bill which seeks to amend the Constitution and give authority to government to acquire land compulsorily.

Addressing the media today at her office flanked by shadow ministers, Kiiza said the Bill is unconstitutional because it tampers with the constitutional right to own property.

The campaign will be started on Saturday in Masaka Municipality.

Last week the deputy attorney general, Mwesigwa Rukutana, tabled the Bill amidst shouts of "No, No" from both the opposition and the NRM MPs, which sent a signal that the Bill is destined to be highly controversial.
