How to maintain wooden furniture

Wooden furniture is a good pick if a person prefers a casual, warm and natural style.

It is a traditional and classic material. If periodically treated and protected well, its durability can be extended for a long period of time.

For home lovers, lately wooden furniture is trending compared to other materials available.

According to John Meddie Segane, a landscaper, wood is the most desirable material for both indoor and outdoor furniture although many home owners tend to avoid it due to its vulnerability to moisture, sunlight and termites.

He says wood doesn't retain heat, so it does not get hot during sunny days. It has relatively low maintenance, but should be treated annually to protect it against deforming and water damage.

"Wooden garden furniture should be periodically treated because it's exposed to all sorts of elements. Treat it before using it and it should be vanished like every after six  months," he advises.

Denis Mugula, a carpenter at Stifula Furniture in Seeta, Mukono,  adds that if a home owner desires trunks in their compounds, before inserting it in the hole, first put a kaveera (polythene bag) around it (trunk) to prevent it from been damaged by water.

Then apply used oil on the lower parts of the trunk to avoid termites from destroying it.
