Netball: Uganda beats Scotland to finish in 7th place

Uganda finished in seventh position overall after beating 55-42 in the classification match at the World Youth Netball Cup in Gaborone, Botswana.

The performance came as surprise to the young She Pearls side following Uganda's three, back-to-back defeats at the University of Botswana indoor arena at the quadrennial event.

They had earlier fallen to Jamaica in the group stage before losing to Fiji and South Africa on Thursday and Friday at the nine-day event.

But in their last match against Scotland, the Ugandan side put up a spirited fight taking the lead, 14-13 in the first quarter, 25-23 in the second and then stretched the lead to 42-30 in the third quarter to finish in seventh place.

Uganda's promising centre player Betty Kizza who also plays for local netball club, NIC did the donkey work as shooters Irene Eyaru and Seera Zam jointly scored all the goals for the victors on Sunday.

The performance puts the She Pearls one place better than their seniors, She Cranes who finished in eighth place overall at the 2015 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia and according to the Uganda Netball Federation president, Suzan Anek, this is a great achievement.

"The girls played very well in the last game and this shows that we have a bright future and as sports ladies we shall not give up but rather hit the limit," said Anek.
