Soroti authorities target shady NGOs

Authorities in Soroti Municipality have vowed to disown non-governmental organizations operating in the area without their knowledge. 

Moses Ecuru the deputy mayor said that there are some briefcase organizations operating in the municipality claiming to be targeting women, youth and orphans without their consent. 

He said some of them end up asking for money from the locals before supporting them and disappear after achieving their goal. 

Ecuru urged residents to tip leaders on any activity that is being conducted by any NGO in the area for easy tracking of such organizations. 

"In Kumi Municipality one of the organizations conned money from the vulnerable people and disappeared, a thing leaders and residents should guard against" Ecuru said. 

Isaac Kawooya the Soroti RDC said that all NGOs are supposed to sign a memorandum of understanding with the district or municipality so that the targeted group of people benefit from the activities. 

Kawooya said people should avoid giving out money to NGOs who are supposed to support them.
