Musagala to headline Kyabazinga Championships

There is a feel good factor in Ugandan athletics in the run up to the World Athletics Championships.

Before you can think of medals, which may or may not be won in London this August, the number of Ugandans who have booked a ticket to the championships is defying conventional wisdom.

Every other week at least one Ugandan athlete is running themselves inside the qualifying marks of the August event.

Barely two weeks since Ronald Musagala broke the national 1500m record, 10,000m runners Moses Kurong and Sam Cherop are the latest to qualify for the London championship.

It had been a case so near yet far for Kurong and Cherop until they hit the qualifying standards after racing on the European circuit for several weeks.

Their qualification brought the total number of qualified athletes to a whopping 18!

Back home, track and field action is in Jinja on Saturday morning in the Kyabazinga Championships.

The event is not a World Championships qualifier which has taken some gloss off the competition.

However the expected presence of Musagala will certainly raise the rating of the Kyabazinga Championships.

Musagala has lately been such a standout performer which had him break his national 1500m record.

"Breaking the national record was one of our targets this season and I can tell you he will do it again," remarked his coach Raphael Kasajja.

He struck two seconds off his previous national record of 3:35.02 when he clocked 3:33.65 at the FBK Games 20 days ago.
