KYADONDO EAST BY-ELECTION

KAMPALA - During voting in the Kyadondo East by-election, the National Resistance Movement(NRM) chairman for Wakiso district, Abdu Kiyimba drew a firearm at voters.

As the crowds continued to charge at Kiyimba, who had earlier been locked in a tough verbal exchange with them, he (Kiyimba), who is also the LC3 chief for Nsangi sub-county, fled the scene in a private car.

The altercation that prompted Kiyimba to flash his pistol at suspected rowdy youth, is now a subject of police investigations, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Frank Mwesigwa has said.

"I was not at the scene at the time but I have been told and subsequently we have launched investigations," Mwesigwa told New Vision on phone.

Explaining the security situation in Kyadondo East, Mwesigwa said it was calm, though, "there was a bit of lawlessness in Wampewo trading centre orchestrated by rowdy youth [not voters] and they have been flashed out."

On Wednesday, the returning officer for Wakiso district, Francis Nkurunziza, leading a team of officers from the Electoral Commission, met all the candidates in Gayaza for the final briefing, where he reminded them of their responsibility, warning of dire consequences for unlawful activities.

He said the police and other security agencies were ready to maintain law and order during the entire process.

The Kyadondo East seat fall vacant after court nullified Apollo Kantinti's 2016 election as the area MP citing irregularities by the Electoral Commission.

Those vying for the seat include; Sitenda Ssebalu (NRM), Apollo Kantinti (FDC) and independent candidates Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, best known as Bobi Wine, Nkunyingi Muwada and Dr. Sowedi Kayongo Male.
