Youth urged against working abroad

The labor officer Pallisa district George Onyait has discouraged youths from taking jobs abroad, claiming they are often abused by their employers.

This follows reports of increasing number of youth intending to go to the Middle East countries for jobs.

On January 7, 2015, government through the ministry of labour, signed an agreement with its Saudi counterpart regarding the employment of Ugandan workers in Saudi Arabia.

The two countries also agreed on standard employment contracts which shall govern the employment of Ugandan domestic workers or housemaids in the desert nation.

But Onyait claims that information of Ugandans being subjected to inhumane treatment in the hands of their employers in Saudi Arabia continues to circulate despite the agreement.

As such, Davido Omogot, an opinion leader in Kumi, has urged rich Ugandans to invest in the country to improve the economy so as to stop Ugandans from going abroad for jobs.
