The vendors want the President to help them open the closed lockups at the sh22b market facility

President Yoweri Museveni has agreed to meet the leaders of Wandegeya Market in Kampala to iron out their grievances including the ownership of 250 closed lockups.

New Vision has learnt that President Museveni has asked the State House comptroller, Lucy Nakyobe, to fix a date in July when he will meet the vendors.

The President's responses followed a petition by the leaders of the vendors, demanding his intervention.

The vendors want Museveni to help them open the closed lockups at the sh22b market facility.

The lockups have remained closed since the market was opened in 2014. New Vision has learnt that a few rich businessmen bought the lockups from the original owners during the construction of the market.

The chairperson of the market, Jonathan Gitta told New Vision that the new owners have continued to pay stall rates to KCCA even as their lockups remain closed.

Gitta said hundreds of vendors who would use the lockups have remained idle on the streets.

Museveni told the vendors on Friday in Wandegeya that he needs more time with them to internalise their problems before deciding what to do for them.
