Man, 26, 'kills father' over family land row

Omara reportedly disagreed with his father over sharing the family land with his sister who returned home after failed marriage.

Police in Dokolo are holding a 26-year-old man for allegedly hitting his father to death with a hand hoe reportedly following a disagreement over family land.

The suspect is Louis Omara, a resident of Okwalongwen village in Amwoma sub-county.

He is said to have hit 50-year-old father, Peter Ocen, three times on the forehead, leading to his death later in a health facility.

Omara reportedly disagreed with his father over the sharing of the family land with his sister who had returned home after a failed marriage.

David Ongom, the regional police spokesperson for North Kyoga said in a statement that Ocen was rushed to Dokolo Health Center IV where he was admitted and later pronounced dead.

He said the case is registered under Dokolo CRB 469/2017 and an investigation into the matter is underway.

"As police, we condemn the circumstance under which the suspect took the law in his hands," said Ongom, adding that they are investigating the death to ensure the law takes its course.

Murder cases have become very rampant in Lango sub-region, some of which involve spouses killing each other and children killing their parents, mostly over land.

In the ongoing High Court criminal session, there are 19 cases of murder cost listed while several hundred remain on remand awaiting trial.

Other cases include 20 aggravated defilement, and one of rape.
