KAMPALA - President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Moses Atwine Kanunira as the director of physical planning at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

Kanunira has been serving as acting director for that position for the last three years.

He has been part of the transformation team since 2012 and has risen through the ranks in that area, starting off as manager, then deputy director until recently as the acting director.

Kanunira has 22 years of working experience and has worked with both local and international organizations at different senior managerial levels.

Before joining KCCA, he taught at Makerere University in the department of Urban and Regional Planning between 2002 and 2007.

He holds a post-graduate Master of Science in Planning from the University of Dortmund Germany and Kumasi University of Science and Technology, Ghana.

In essence, he took charge on May 10.

What plans he has for KCCA

In a phone interview, the newly appointed director told New Vision that KCCA works as a team and below are some of the plans that they intend to implement:

>> We have embarked on the street naming and numbering and I hope that in the next three years the entire city will have a 80-100% coverage.

>> We want to make it easy for the business community by embarking on the smart permit proposal as a solution for those who are applying for permits. KCCA will have online records for all permits.

>> We want to make efforts for planning for the city and KCCA will have a detailed structural plan for Kampala. It will be the responsibility of the authority under my directorate to engage government and development partners to have a detailed plan for the city.

>> Decongestion of the city is one of campaign that KCCA started in 2014 to make the city attractive and vibrant city.

"There is a lot of rural-urban migration and we are prepared to cater for the people coming to the city," said Kanunira.

He said that KCCA is opposed to street vending and those trading on pavements. They also plan to reduce the traffic jam in partnership with the directorate of engineering.
