Two arrested over theft of street lights

On several occasions residents have been arrested for vandalizing KCCA property

Two residents of Massajja in Makindye division were arrested for allegedly stealing street lights along Salaama Road.

Erias Ahimbisibwe a boda-boda cyclist and Archram Kintu, were arrested after a tip off from a local defence officer who alerted Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

Kintu was arrested while climbing an electric pole cutting down the lights, while Ahimbisibwe was arrested as an accomplice.

According KCCA director of public and corporate affairs, Peter Kaujju, the duo were arrested with street lights worth sh8m. The cost of each street light is sh800,000.

He said that on several occasions residents have been arrested for vandalizing KCCA property which includes manhole covers, dustbins and electric poles which they sell to scrap dealers.

"KCCA has come up with a program of training communities on how to arrest suspects" Kaujju said.

The suspects were arrested on Friday and detained at Kampala Central Police Station ahead of a court appearance.
