Councilors back call on academic qualification

Soroti councilors say the district councilors should have attained a senior six certificate.

Soroti councilors have supported the proposal fronted by the association of LC5s in Uganda that wants government to set a minimum academic qualification for persons aspiring to become councilors.

Last week the chairman of LC5s in Uganda, George Mutabazi, stated that due to no academic qualifications for district councilors the councils have found it difficult to work with councilors who don't understand English.

It was evident during the swearing in ceremonies where councilors failed to read the vows even with assistance from the clerk.

Speaking to Etop Radio on Wednesday, the district councilors of Soroti supported the idea for councilors to have a minimum academic qualification.

Although the LC5s association was proposing that district councilors should have attained a senior four certificate but Soroti councilors say the district councilors should have attained a senior six certificate.
