People are now worried that hunger might get worse

Heavy downpour accompanied with hailstorms over the weekend destroyed over 305 gardens in Katine Sub County, Soroti district.

Among the crops that were destroyed include millet, sorghum, cassava and bananas among others.

Moses Emugu Eroju, the area LC3 chairperson said the most affected villages are Merok and Ojwiny.

He explained that people are now worried that hunger might get worse since the crops that were expected to be harvested in the month of June and July have been destroyed.

"There is need for government to come into support people whose crops were ravaged by the hailstorm with relief food" Emuge said.

New Vision caught up with Julius Areu one of the victims who said the destruction has left them with an unpredictable future.

"We are very disappointed over the destruction of our crops" Areu said.

He added that he has never seen this type of hailstorms since he was born in late 90s.

"The hail storms killed even one goat and more that 30 hens on a same day" Areu added.

Richard Enenu the LCI chairman Merok village in Katine said the only hope that they have is for government to support them with relief food that can push them to the next season.
