President Yoweri Museveni has described the late James Tibekyinga, the fallen former commissioner of external trade in the Ministry of Commerce, as a patriotic and committed Ugandan, who performed his duties diligently. Museveni described his death as loss of a hardworking and patriotic civil servant.

"The death of Tibekyinga is not only loss to the family, relatives and friends, but also the entire nation at large," reads part of the message read by Charles Kareeba, the service emcee during the funeral service at All Saints' Church,  Nakasero, Kampala on Monday morning.

Museveni also contributed sh15m towards the burial arrangements for Tibekyinga.

Joy Tibekyinga hailed her late husband for taking care of the family from the time she got married to him in 1968 up to the time of his death. She also hailed relatives and friends who visited Tibekyinga when he was sick and those who contributed money and food to the family.

"My husband has been good for the family and I thank him for having been there for us," she said.

Prof. Stanley Tumwine, Tibekyinga's elder brother and President Yoweri Museveni's physician, said the late has been living in life free from sickness until early this year when he started developing some complications.

Tumwine said Tibekyinga underwent prostate operations at Mengo Hospital, but other illness continued to attack him. He said the late was later diagnosed and was found out to be having tumour on one of his lungs, which was cancerous. It is the tumour that has claimed his life, he said.

"Tibekyinga liked music, scouting and education. He has been a scandal-free servant and this saw him rise to the level of commissioner in the ministry of commerce," he stated, adding that the late was sociable and that's why he had many friends by the time of death.

Tibekyinga's children David, Derek and Sheila hailed their late father for providing them with education.

The funeral service was attended by high ranked Government officials  and civil servants, including Brig. Richard Karemire, the spokesperson Uganda People's Defence Force, Sam Bitangaro, MP Bufumbira South, Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, Science and technology minister, former ministers Richard Kaijuka, Yona Kanyomozi and Chris Rwakasisi.
