KABERAMAIDO - A 20-year-old man believed to be a thief was killed by a mob in a remote village in Kaberamaido district on Saturday.

Tonny Emunyu, who was a resident of Angudawele village in Kobulubulu sub-county, was attacked by locals after reportedly trying to steal a goat.

He was with two others who managed to flee.

The owner of the goat, Sam Okot, said he came out of his house in the middle of the night and saw someone near his goats. He then raised an alarm which startled the three men, who took off.

But during their flight from Okot's home, residents who had responded to the call caught up with Emunyu and attacked him - eventually killing him.

District police commander Ahmed Madiri (pictured below) confirmed the incident and condemned the mob killing. The incident happened in Odoot A village in Kaberamaido sub-county.

Emunyu's wife said they had been together hours before his death. He then left her in Kaberamaido town, telling her that he was going to the village with friends.

"I had warned my husband to stop moving with wrong company but he paid little attention to my advice," said Alice Akello.

"He left me in town saying he was going to the village, only to be told later that he had been killed."

The dead man's grandmother Beatrice Akullo has been taking care of him. She said when the mob chased Emunyu up to near their home, she feared to come out of the house.

"I heard everything that was happening from outside but I could not come out since I feared to be beaten."

Last year on Christmas Eve, a man suspected to have stolen a pig was lynched by a mob in the same village.

A former parish female councillor of Kaberamaido parish, Hellen Iperu, comes from the same area and said the place is a den of thieves.

"We have many youths who are believed to be involved in stealing people's animals and other things. The stealing will not even stop soon since others are still at large."

Meanwhile, police detained Okot and the LC1 of Angudawele village Jimmy Ejulu for further interrogation into the latest incident.
