According to her father, Brian Ekisa, Apio’s sister passed on a few hours after birth in Naguru hospital leaving Apio with breathing complications.

Praise Apio, a surviving twin who was born prematurely at six months and a half, has a hole on the heart and her blood vessels are too narrow to transport blood normally.

According to her father, Brian Ekisa,   Apio’s sister passed on a few hours after birth in Naguru hospital leaving Apio with breathing complications.

On top of being restless, Apio who is three years now, refused to breastfeed and cried all the time.

However, after two days, due to the severity of her condition, doctors in Naguru referred her to Mulago Hospital where she was diagnosed with a heart condition that necessitated an open heart surgery.

“Dr Sulaiman Lubega  of the Uganda Heart Institute diagnosed Apio with a big hole on her heart and also discovered that her veins are too narrow to transport blood normally,” explains Ekisa, an unemployed primary teacher.

He adds that he was advised to fly two-year-old Apio to India for an urgent operation because the Heart Institute lacks the necessary equipment to carry out this operation.

“Through a well-wisher Mary Jane, we managed to get a sponsor for the surgery in India Bangalore,” he states.

However, he notes that he is now looking for Sh7,920,000/- for  air tickets and visas for both the mother and child which he cannot afford since  he was sacked from his job because he was always  in and out of hospital due to his daughter’s condition.

Ekisa says that he is currently struggling to make ends meet and his wife is also jobless. So, he seeks help from good Samaritans.
