According to the traditions, the women broke laws and customs

Two women received 20 strokes of cane each for allegedly defecating in their father-in-law's kitchen.

Jane Namukirori, 25, and Zaina Lumba, 26, residents of Kitumbezi village in Bukabooli Sub County in Mayuge district were on Tuesday punished by the LC1 chairperson John Opio, following a complaint from Paul Okware.

While in the meeting in Kitumbezi village, the husbands of the duo, residents and LC1 committee unanimously resolved that Namukirori and Lumba be punished publicly following their transgressions.

"You are punished for defecating in the kitchen of your father in-law," Opio said adding that the act performed by the two daughters-in-law is a disgrace to the clan members, husbands and the whole community.

He said according to the traditions, the women broke the laws and customs and must seek forgiveness from their father-in-law.

Namukirori and Lumba were also ordered to buy four new sauce pans, plates and a mingling stick since the old ones had been smeared with human faeces.

"After defecating in kitchen, they smeared all the utensils with their faeces. We have ordered them to buy new items," Opio said.

Okware also complained about indiscipline acts such as abuses, intentional undressing of clothes by his daughters-in-law in his presence.

"They have bad manners. They intentionally undress their clothes in my presence. They abuse and laugh at me every time," Okware aged 80 said.

He added that he has tried to talk to his sons about the acts of their wives but nothing seems to change.

Sanda Omiri, Namukirori's husband said the duo deserved the punishment.

"I have on several occasion advised my wife to respect father but all in vain. I regret why I married her. She has brought misery and division in the family," Omiri said.

However, while in the meeting, Namukirori and Lumba accused Okware of ill advising their husbands.

"Our husbands don't want to listen to us, they don't give us respect and always believe in what their father says or decides," they said.

The LC1 committee and residents warned the two women against misbehaving and threatened to chase them away from the village if they repeat such behaviour.
