When we empower girls, everybody benefits

By 1950, the few women who went to school were the ones who had their parents that had the passion for education.

Girls who are educated, healthy and free can transform their communities and pass on the benefits to their children when they grow into women. 

Even when a girl's only school- Gayaza Junior was established in 1904, the wealthy village chiefs did not see why they should send their girls to school when they had to get married.

By 1950, the few women who went to school were the ones who had their parents that had the passion for education. The situation worsened during the 1970s and early 1980s as the economy deteriorated and violence increased owing to the infamous regimes.

But as all roads lead to Dokolo district tomorrow, to celebrate the International Women's Day, we cannot underestimate the role of education in uplifting women and the nation's economy.
