Sipi Falls Marathon registration extended

Olympic gold medallist Stephen Kiprotich will be among thousands expected to participate in the marathon

The thousands of people registering for the first edition of the Sipi Falls Marathon will have little worries about thirst after Aqua Sipi offered all the water needed for the day.

The run that was due to take place on February 28 in Kapchorwa has now been moved to March 4 to allow more people register for the marathon aimed at identifying talent and creating awareness about the need to maintain the river banks of Sipi Falls.

According to Sam Bukose Chemutai the managing director of the marathon, the extension was necessitated to allow more corporate companies and individuals join the marathon targeting close to 25,000 people.

The event is also aimed at creating awareness in the community about the need for the youth to develop their talent on top of engaging in income generating projects through agriculture.

Olympic gold medallist Stephen Kiprotich and other elite runners like Joshua Cheptegei and Asbel Kiprop will be among thousands expected to participate in the marathon.

The men and women categories will compete in the 10, 21 and 42km races upon payment of sh5,000 each with cash prizes going to the top runners in each category.

The winner of the marathon will pocket sh1m while that of the 21 and 10km races will walk away with the same amount and sh750,000 respectively, with the top ten, top seven and the top five in the different races also getting cash.

The 10km race will start from Kawocom offices, the 21km from Stephen Kiprotich's residence while the 42km marathon will begin from the Sipi Falls.
